Inspiring Young Readers

Ivy Newt and the Vampixies by Derek Keilty, illustrated by Magda Brol
I am a big fan of stories with a useful map at the beginning as a guide for the reader. The magical land of Miracula is not that big but includes plenty of intriguing places including several castles, Lake Eeyrie and a Haunted House. The range of illustrated characters are also set out to help the reader frame the story which is the fourth of a successful series.
A glimpse into family life at Newt castle shows us the endearing Queen Fenella - who hates cleaning despite pleas from her husband King Lucius who is fed up with the clutter and cobwebs everywhere. It seems that she and her mischievous royal familiars, Binky the Badger and Scurry the Squirrel prefer a dusty and messy environment. The problem is that Ivy’s invisibility hat has gone missing and even help from her familiar, Tom the wolf/boy doesn’t help. Once Griselda the Sand Witch arrives it is found and the big adventure can begin to find ingredients for an exciting magic spell.
Like all parents, the queen is a bit concerned that they might ‘get into some rather precarious situations’ but Griselda reassures her that they will be absolutely safe with her. Young readers will immediately be alerted to inevitable dangers that may follow!
I will not spoil the plot other than to warn you that the adventurers include falling into an extinct volcano and then becoming involved with the evil Queen Drusilla and the Vampixies who are threatening to suck all the magic out of Miracula for ever! Will they be able to work with other forces for good to thwart her wicked intentions? Will they escape from the clutches of the gruesome Dust Monster?
This thrilling adventure story continues across the island and surrounding sea with plenty of jeopardy along the way. The plentiful black and white illustrations by Magda Brol add to the atmosphere throughout. I liked the way that they occasionally dominate the page when something particularly scary happens.
I recommend this charming little book that will keep young readers fully engaged. Published by Scallywag Books, it is available from your local independent bookshop who will order it if not already on their shelves.
