An interview with Sarah Hewitt

The Letterpress Project has asked authors and illustrators to think about what has inspired them as artists, what their favourite books are and how they relate to their audience - we've also asked them if they themselves are book collectors.

We are delighted to present an exclusive interview with author/illustrator, Sarah Hewitt. Sarah has always loved to draw and her early experiences influenced her first picture book 'Grandad'. She works from her studio in a beautiful Leicestershire village.

Since graduating from the MA Children's Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art, Sarah has written and illustrated six books for children. Her latest picture book ‘Anna’s Garden’ has a neurodivergent lead, and a diverse cast. The story celebrates difference, encourages self reliance and fosters kindness.

You can read more in Sarah’s Sketchbook which tells the story of her journey to become a picture book creator.

Last year Sarah published ‘Yours Affectionately’, a historical collection of letters and ‘Panacea Poetry’, the precious collection of poetry and art by her late daughter Bethany Johnson.
