The social construction of childhood: explored with reference to Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah by Lauren Dark
The Letterpress Project is always delighted to publish the work of students who have written about or used books as a key part of their assignments. Here we showcase an essay from Newman University student, Lauren Dark. Lauren told us:
"This essay was submitted for the level 4 module ‘Constructs of Childhood’ as part of an Undergraduate BA Honours Degree in Early Childhood Education and Care’ at Newman University. I selected the book ‘Refugee Boy’ as the work done by Zephaniah shares insight to different issues that are not commonly talked about, such as social injustice and race. This allowed me to analyse these topics in relation to the fluctuating views surrounding childhoods within society, thus answering the question, how are childhoods socially constructed?"
