Inspiring Young Readers
An Interview With Bárður Oskarsson
The Letterpress Project has asked authors and illustrators to think about what has inspired them as artists, what their favourite books are and how they relate to their audience - we've also asked them if they themselves are book collectors.
We are delighted to present an interview with Bárður Oskarsson. Bárður (born 18 July 1972 in Torshavn) is an award-winning Faroese artist, author and illustrator. Early in his career, Oskarsson was an illustrator for the Faroese children’s magazine, Barnablaðið (now known as Strok). At the age of twenty, he illustrated his grandfather Oskar Hermannsson’s children’s novel, Undir tussafjøllum/Under the Troll Mountains (1992). Since then he has illustrated books by several Faroese authors including Marianna Debes Dahl and Guðrun Gaard.
In 2004, he wrote and illustrated his first book - Ein hundur, ein ketta og ein mús / Dog, Cat and Mouse, which was later published in French (2006), Icelandic (2007), Danish (2008), Norwegian (2013), and is set for its English release in 2018 by Darf Publishers. Oskarsson has since published six other children’s titles in Faroese, including The Flat Rabbit, which has now been translated into ten languages.
