An Interview with Ally Sherrick

The Letterpress Project has asked authors and illustrators to think about what has inspired them as artists, what their favourite books are and how they relate to their audience - we've also asked them if they themselves are book collectors.

We are delighted to present an exclusive interview with the children's author, Ally Sherrick. Ally's debut children’s novel, BLACK POWDER (published by Chicken House Books), about a boy caught up in the infamous Gunpowder Plot, won the 2017 Historical Association’s Young Quills Award and the North Somerset Teachers’ Book Award 2017 (‘Moving on’ category) and was shortlisted for a number of other regional and national awards. Her second novel, THE BURIED CROWN, set during World War Two, is about two children who uncover a Nazi plot to steal a priceless item of Anglo-Saxon treasure.

Ally has a BA in medieval history, English and French from the University of Newcastle and an MA in Writing for Children from the University of Winchester. She loves exploring ruined castles and decaying mansions and imagining what it must have been like to live in them without electricity and hot and cold running water – although she’s quite glad she doesn’t have to herself!

She is married and lives with her husband and assorted garden wildlife in Farnham, Surrey.
