Donald and Benoit by John Patrick Byrne
John Byrne is a fabulous painter and playwright from Paisley in Scotland and a key part of the cultural scene in Scotland in the late 20th and early 21st century. He's also father of twins with his one time partner, the actress Tilda Swinton and this wonderful book was written to entertain his children at bedtime.
Benoit lives in Fishertown with his father, Jean-Kiki, and one day he brings home a scrawny-looking cat that Benoit immediately names Donald. They become firm friends and spend all their time together until, one day, Jean-Kiki buys himself a fishing boat and heads out to Finisterre in search of a big haul to make their fortune. Left alone to look after each other, Donald and Benoit spend their time at the Dark Night of the Lemon Sole Cafe and the Electric Eel Cinema.
Donald is an unusual cat - not only does he wear boxing trunks to cover his modesty but his favourite food is black pudding and chips. Now that's what I call a pet!
However, potential tragedy is just around the corner when they get news that Jean-Kiki's boat has been lost in a storm. Benoit is distraught but Donald resolves to find a way to earn money and look after his friend and he forms a music group called Donald and the Devil Dogs in which Donald plays a set of homemade drums.
I'm glad to say that the story has a happy ending which you'll have to read for yourself. Byrne is such a striking artist and it's great to see his work translates across to book illustration. You've got to get yourself a copy ( that's an order) and once it's on your shelf you'll never let it go.
