Our Gorgeous Baby by Smriti Halls, illustrated by Eve Coy

Those of us with experience of babies in the family might nod their heads in agreement with the sentiment of this picture book. Who could not be smitten with love at the sight of the huge eyes and smiling, cheeky little face looking out from the cover? I found this an interesting image, because I suggest that it is marketed at adults who might describe the baby as ‘gorgeous’ rather than young children who might be less enthusiastic?

But once the simple story begins, it is evident that the author and illustrator are using the term with tongue in cheek. We see that the baby is definitely not ‘light as a feather’ as her older sister struggles to lift her. She is shown joining in with imaginative play, but not always in the way that her sister might prefer:

‘Though we call her ‘princess’ she’s more often a clown’.

The siblings are shown enjoying their time playing together and then out and about with their parents and other family members. My favourite double page spread shows how she is admired everywhere they go – you can almost here the oohs and ahhs as several adults look at her fondly in the park, supermarket, library and garden.

The reality of her ‘gorgeousness’ is more nuanced as she is clearly a poor sleeper, a very messy eater and more inclined to burp loudly rather than coo sweetly! She also has an impressive temper which is graphically shown where she is completely overwhelmed with anger. I suppose that part of the charm of babies is that they can switch from being a bundle of inconsolable rage to being compliant and happy within seconds. Despite her wide- ranging emotions and sometimes demanding behaviour, this baby is clearly adored by her sister who shows not a trace of jealousy or frustration.

The final double page spread shows the parents and children cuddling in bed together after enjoying some stories with the dog looking on at the idyllic family tableau.

Published by Walker Books, you will be able to buy this book about unconditional love from your local independent bookshop – who will be happy to order it for you if they don’t have it on their shelves.
