I am Brown by Ashok Banker, illustrated by Sandhya Prabhat

If you’re tired – like I am – of the way brown skin is so often associated with deficit models or ‘problems’ then help may be at hand in the shape of this fabulous new picture book by author, Ashok Banker and the talented illustrations of Sandhya Prabhat.

If you are concerned – like I am – that children with brown skin don’t see enough images of themselves as positive and valuable members of society who do all the things white people do and do them just as well, you can open these pages and take a look.

This is a glorious celebration of the normality of brown skin and a zinging affirmation of living life in a community of people who love, build friendships, have times of great happiness and who can become any occupation they want to be.

The book’s hugely positive message kicks off as if it comes directly  from a power pack:

“I am brown.

I am beautiful.

I am perfect.”

And having grabbed you by the throat, it doesn’t ever let go.

“I am love.

I am friendship.

I am happiness.”

Brown people are from every part of the world, do all kinds of jobs, build all sorts of buildings, have all kinds of faiths and beliefs, wear all kinds of clothes, eat all sorts of food and win all manner of prizes. They are exceptional because they’re not exceptional – they are people and are as valuable and wonderful as all people can be.

Ultimately:

“I am brown.

I am amazing.

I am you.”

This is such a simple but effective message that its meaning hits home with a bang but it has to be said that a lot of its effectiveness comes from the really engaging and delightful illustrations from Sandhya Prabhat who fills the pages with vitality and glowing colour.

This is a book that you have to hold in your hand to really appreciate its joyousness and Lantana Publishing have done their usual excellent job of producing a book that’s really a work of art.

It would be a crime if you can’t find a copy of the book in your local bookshop but if that’s the case go to the website to order one. It’s available now.
