An Interview With Julian Sedgwick

The Letterpress Project has asked authors and illustrators to think about what has inspired them as artists, what their favourite books are and how they relate to their audience - we've also asked them if they themselves are book collectors.

We are delighted to present an interview with the children's author Julian Sedgwick. Julian is the author of six books for children, and co-author of the graphic novel Dark Satanic Mills.

On the way to realising his childhood ambition to write, Julian read Oriental Studies and Philosophy at Cambridge, before working as a bookseller, painter, researcher for film and TV and therapist.

The first book in his Mysterium trilogy - The Black Dragon - was published by Hodder Children’s Books in 2013 and won the Rotherham Children’s Book Award. Following completion of the Mysterium a new trilogy opened in 2015 with Ghosts of Shanghai. The last book in the series - Return to the City of Ghosts - was published in January 2018.

Julian lives just north of Cambridge, is married and has two sons. In his spare time he draws as much as possible, and waits for the weather to get cold enough to go fen skating.
